Calaxo Bone Screw Injuries and Lawsuits

Also known as the Calaxo Osteoconductive Interference Screw, a Calaxo bone screw is a medical device used to stabilize the knee and help it recover following Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) surgery.

ACL injuries are the most common types of knee injuries, and they typically occur as a result of sports accidents and slip and fall injuries. From March 2006 to August 2007, treatments for such ACL injuries typically involved reconstructive surgery and implantation of Calaxo bone screws.

Shortly after their FDA approval in 2006, Calaxo bone screws were found to cause a few severe side effects, including fragmentation of the screw and severe knee pain. By August 2007, the manufacturers of Calaxo bone screws (Smith & Nephew) voluntarily recalled all lots of these devices due to mounting reports of Calaxo screw injuries. However, thousands of patients had already been injured, and many more will continue to develop serious health complications as a result of these bone screws.

Injured patients may have a legal claim against Smith & Nephew and can learn more about their legal rights by consulting with an experienced defective product attorney.

Complications Associated with Calaxo Bone Screws

Although Calaxo bone screws are supposed to promote bone growth and faster ACL recovery times, these medical devices have been reported to cause some serious injuries with two to 36 weeks of implantation. Severe Calaxo screw side effects may include:

  • infection
  • joint or knee pain
  • loss of flexibility in the knee joint
  • redness and/or swelling around knee joint

Patients who develop such complications will likely need to undergo some combination of:

  • bone graft
  • removal or replacement of the Calaxo bone screw
  • removal of any screw fragments
  • removal of infected or dead tissue or bone surrounding the screw
  • removal of the ligament to which the screw was implanted

Such surgical interventions are involved and will require follow-up physical therapy as a long-term treatment.

Compensation for Calaxo Bone Screw Injuries

It's vital that patients who sustain Calaxo bone screw injuries seek emergency medical care to prevent further damage to their health. Once their health is stable, it's then crucial that they meet with a defective product lawyer who specializes in Calaxo bone screw lawsuits for a free initial consultation.

In this meeting, prospective plaintiffs can get an expert evaluation of their case, as well as advice regarding the best manner in which to pursue their claim.

To encourage those with viable legal claims against Smith & Nephew to stand up for their legal rights, defective product attorneys work on contingency – so no payment for legal services will be due until or unless the case is won.
