Calaxo Screw Lawsuit

Calaxo screw lawsuits are defective medical device cases in which plaintiffs seek compensation after developing serious health complications as a result of Calaxo surgical screws.

What is a Calaxo Screw?

Developed to replace metal screws, Calaxo bone screws are bioabsorbale polymer screws used to promote bone growth following Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery (a type of knee surgery). Calaxo screws were produced by Smith & Nephew and were primarily used from March 2006 (when they were first approved by the FDA) until August 2007 (when they were voluntarily recalled).

Although Calaxo screws are no longer used in the U.S., some individuals will continue to sustain serious side effects of these medical devices. Those injured as a result of Calaxo screws should, of course, seek medical attention from their healthcare providers, but should also speak with one of our experienced and highly-skilled Calaxo Screw lawyers who will evaluate the case and advise them on the best way to pursue their legal claim.

Calaxo Screw Recall

In August 2007, Smith & Nephew voluntarily recalled all lots of its Calaxo screw, as an increasing number of patient reports highlighted the incidence and severity of the screw's side effects. Among the severe side effects associated with Calaxo screws are:

  • fragmentation of the screw
  • infection
  • loss of knee flexibility
  • pre-tibial soft tissue swelling
  • severe pain and inflammation at the site of surgery

According to the FDA, a total of over 68,000 Calaxo screws were recalled in the U.S.

Anyone who suspects they have a Calaxo screw implant should consult their doctor for a complete physical evaluation. Detecting and treating potential side effects in their early stages offers patients the best chances of recovery.

Calaxo Screw Injury Treatments

Upon developing serious Calaxo screw injuries, patients will likely need surgery to remove:

  • Calaxo screw or fragments of it
  • infected or dead tissues or bone surrounding the screw
  • ligament to which the screw was attached

If ligaments are removed, patients may also need a bone graft to reconstruct the knee joint. Following surgical treatments, patients will also likely need to undergo physical therapy and extensive rehabilitation to regain knee function.
