Calaxo Surgical Screws

Produced by Smith & Nephew, Calaxo bone screws are medical devices implanted to promote bone growth and joint recovery following Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) reconstruction surgery. Calaxo screws – which are officially known as Calaxo Osteoconductive Interference Screws – were first approved by the FDA and available for use in the U.S. in March 2006.

A little over a year later, however, in August 2007, Smith & Nephew issued an international voluntarily recall of its Calaxo screws, as an increasing number of patients reported the development of serious related side effects.

Although Calaxo screws have since been taken off the market, individuals who underwent ACL surgeries from March 2006 to August 2007 may have received a Calaxo screw implant and may be at risk of developing severe health complications.

Patients who do end up sustaining severe Calaxo surgical screw side effects will be entitled to a settlement for their injuries and losses. Prospective plaintiffs should consult with an experienced personal injury attorney to learn more about their legal rights and entitlements.

What is ACL Surgery?

As one of four major ligaments in the knee, the ACL is responsible for stabilizing the knee and limiting the degree to which it can rotate. Stretching or tearing the ACL is the most common type of knee injury and it typically occurs when the knee:

  • is dislocated
  • is severely twisted
  • sustains high-pressure contact

Surgery, pain medication and physical therapy are commonly used to treat ACL tears and injuries.

Calaxo Screw Complications

Severe injuries associated with the use of Calaxo bone screws include:

  • fragmentation of the screw
  • infection
  • joint or knee pain
  • loss of flexibility in the knee joint
  • redness or inflammation around knee joint

In most cases, symptoms of these Calaxo screw side effects will arise between two and 36 weeks after an ACL surgery and screw implantation.

Upon the development of such serious Calaxo screw injuries, it's essential that injured parties seek immediate medical attention to prevent further damage to their health. Treatments for these side effects may include:

  • local debridement (the process of removing dead or infected tissue or bone)
  • removal of screw fragments
  • replacement of the ligament graft on which the screw was anchored
