Richard Cohn

Mr. Richard Cohn obtained his Bachelor of Arts Degree, graduating cum laude from the University of California at San Diego in 1985 with a Double Major in Political Science and Communications.

 

Mr. Cohn obtained a Juris Doctorate Degree, graduating from the University of Southern California Law Center in 1989, ranking in the top one-fourth of his class. Was Editor of Major Tax Planning and Computer Law Journals at U.S.C. Law Center. Was also elected Vice President of the Student Bar Association.

 

After graduating from U.S.C. Law School in May of 1989 and passing the California Bar Examination in July of that same year, Mr. Cohn began his legal career at the law firm of McGinnis, Fitzgerald, Reese, Sharkey & McIntyre in San Diego, California, specializing in the field of medical malpractice.

In July of 1990, Mr. Cohn relocated to Orange County and has practiced at Aitken * Aitken * Cohn ever since.  He handles a variety of cases in major tort litigation including personal injury, aviation disaster litigation, insurance bad faith, medical malpractice, products liability, premises liability, governmental tort liability, employment discrimination and wrongful termination.

 

Mr. Cohn has successfully tried before judge and jury and/or arbitrated a variety of matters, including medical malpractice suits, insurance disputes, and personal injury matters. Most recently, he obtained a $729,000.00 binding arbitration award against State Farm Insurance where the insurance giant had offered only $15,000.00 for settlement in a personal injury case. (Hernandez v. State Farm) He also recently obtained a trial verdict of $588,000.00 in a medical negligence matter in Orange County Superior Court. (Barcenas v. Goldstein, M.D., Inc.)

 

Mr. Cohn additionally has played a major role with Mr. Aitken as co-counsel in a variety of lengthy and complex trials which have resulted in multi-million dollar verdicts. These include: Small v. County of Orange (involving the attack of a mountain lion on a young child in a public park -- Verdict: $2,100,000); Chavez v. Altig (a complex medical malpractice case wherein a 25 year old man was blinded as a result of anesthesia during ankle surgery -- Verdict: $3,800,000); Scott v. Burges Transportation, et al (wherein a Journeyman immigrant plumbing contractor was seriously injured when he was run over by a dump truck on a construction site -- Verdict: $1,900,000); M. v. Wings Express Aviation, et al. (an aviation case wherein a Piper Cherokee VI aircraft crashed at Fullerton Airport due to a combination of contaminated fuel and poor maintenance --Verdict $2,760,535).

 

Mr. Cohn is currently the President, of the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association and is a member of the Orange County Bar Association, and Federal Bar Association, and in 1993 acted as Judge Pro Tem for the Orange County Superior Court.

Mr. Cohn married his wife in 1993. They have two children.
