CASE DESCRIPTION: On August 30, 2008, Karen P. was crossing Sports Arena Boulevard at its intersection with Hancock Street, within a crosswalk and with a “walk” signal, when she was struck by a vehicle driven by Defendant, Fred A., who was 86 years old at the time. Fred struck Karen while completing a left turn from Hancock Street onto Sports Arena Boulevard. Fred’s vehicle struck Karen’s right leg, causing displaced tibial fractures which required surgery including a rod and ten screws. Karen was 65 years old at the time of the incident, and had recently retired after working for Goodwill Industries for more than 40 years.
RESULTS: $1,000,000
DATE OF SETTLEMENT: January 16, 2013
INJURIES: Karen underwent dramatic surgery on her right knee in an attempt to repair the displaced tibial fractures, the fibula displaced fractures and the comminuted plateau fractures. Surgery included open reduction, internal fixation with hardware including a plate and ten screws. Despite extensive physical therapy, Karen was left unable to fully bend her right knee, and thus required assistance post-incident with housekeeping, laundry, bathing and walking around the community.
