Michael Penn obtained his Bachelor of Arts degree in political science with an emphasis in international relations, graduating with honors from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1998. He studied abroad at Sophia University in Tokyo, Japan, during his junior year (1996 to 1997).
free consultationAfter graduation, he returned to Tokyo and worked at Toyo Corporation. Mr. Penn obtained his Juris Doctorate degree from Chapman University School of Law in 2004 and was elected student commencement speaker.
In May 2003, Michael Penn began working at Aitken Aitken Cohn as a law clerk and, after passing the July bar exam in 2004, was promoted to associate attorney. In 2015, Michael was named partner.
Michael Penn has spoken on a wide range of legal panels and presented at plaintiff attorney seminars for the Consumer Attorneys of California, the Orange County Trial Lawyers Association, Orange County Bar Association, Consumer Attorneys of the Inland Empire, Consumer Attorneys of Los Angeles, Ventura County Bar Association and the San Diego Trial Lawyers Association. He has appeared on NBC’s The Today Show, and his comments have appeared in the Los Angeles Times, the Orange County Register, and the Daily Journal.
Michael married his wife, Ashleigh, in 2002. They have three beautiful daughters. *Michael’s wife, Ashleigh Aitken, serves as the first female elected Mayor of the City of Anaheim which makes him Anaheim’s “First Gentleman,” but he prefers the title, “First Dude.” When he manages a spare moment, Michael is grateful to spend time with his family and friends. He also enjoys playing tennis, snowboarding, and watching Angels baseball and Anaheim Ducks hockey.

Michael Penn has been involved in numerous high profile cases resulting in seven and eight figure results. These cases include, but are not limited to, McClellan v. Scully Distribution Services, Inc., et al, involving traumatic injuries to an elderly bicyclist suffered in a collision with a semi-tractor (result $5,815,000). Michael served as the firm’s representative on the Plaintiff Steering Committee for the Chatsworth Metrolink Collision Cases and worked alongside the firm’s founding partner, Wylie Aitken, in directing litigation for two wrongful death cases: In re Alan Buckley and In re Howard Pompel (total results $5,175,000). Michael served as trial counsel with Darren Aitken on Friel vs. Ford Motor Company et al, involving traumatic injuries to a motorcyclist in a collision with a Ford F-350 caused by a manufacturing defect in the truck’s sector steering shaft (verdict $2,601,058). Michael also served as litigation and trial counsel with Wylie Aitken and Darren Aitken on Gutierrez vs. The United States, involving paralyzing injuries to a four year old child in a vehicle collision caused by a military employee (verdict $55,184,288).
